Mesothelioma is an asbestos-related disease that can only be contracted by direct exposure to asbestos. Quite tragically, those diagnosed with mesothelioma discover they are sick in the later stages of the disease. The health risks caused by asbestos sometimes do not come into known existence until over 30 years after the dates of elongated exposure. This was the case with a man diagnosed with mesothelioma in his late 60s. Peter Downing, now age 68, is in desperate search of former colleagues who worked the same jobs as he did when he was an apprentice. It was during this time that he was exposed to asbestos. He was in charge of removing asbestos from shop roofs using only hand tools. Being a non-smoker, he suspects that his mesothelioma was a direct result of this tedious job, but does not recollect the details of his work environment. As a consequence, he is diligently using any means at his disposal to locate anyone who worked on these same jobs with him.
Being diagnosed with mesothelioma is devastating and shocking to many. Downing states, “As I have never smoked, the mesothelioma has come as a dreadful shock to my wife and I. I feel sure it must be linked to my employment at Tranfield & Co where I recall being exposed to asbestos.”
