Steelworkers Demand Inquiry into Withheld Mesothelioma Study

In reaction to the news that the State of Minnesota allegedly withheld information regarding the development of mesothelioma in 35 more Iron Range workers than in the 17 that were originally reported, United Steelworkers are calling for a legislative and criminal investigation into the situation.

The Duluth News Tribune reported a story recently that detailed the outrage of this powerful labor union, and it appears that several local politicians are running for cover.  The story specifically states that the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Pawlenty, distanced itself from the issue:

“Our office was not involved in the Health Department’s decision regarding the mesothelioma study,” said Alex Carey, a spokesman for Pawlenty. “We believe they should have released the information sooner.”

This effort did not diminish the strong language inherent in statements from the union:

“This has been so badly handled by the Department of Health that it has to be looked into,” Bob Bratulich, United Steelworkers District 11 director, said.

What this story tells us is that this issue is far from complete.  If you have been exposed to asbestos, you need to contact the asbestos lawyers at Williams Kherkher today for a free initial consultation.
