Clutch Mechanics are at-risk for Asbestos Exposure

In March of 2007, Timothy C. Barmann of the Providence Journal reported the story of a retired mechanic who won a $2 million verdict against defendants General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co.  The case was held in Delaware’s New Castle County Superior Court, and it is just one of many cases where big corporations were held liable for asbestos exposure.

The mechanic in this case, 79-year-old Roland Leo Grenier Sr., worked as a mechanic for 38 years, and many of his duties included working with brakes and clutches, many of which contained asbestos fibers.  Grenier was ultimately diagnosed with mesothelioma after he had retired to Florida.

The story also contained the disturbing statistic that more than 700,000 people in the United States had filed compensation claims for asbestos-related injuries between the years of 1970 and 2002.  It should be noted that if a government disability claim is approved, the taxpayers are the ones who foot the bill.

If you have been exposed to asbestos by any means, you need to seek immediate medical attention.  As soon as you’ve gotten started with your treatment, contact the asbestos lawyers at Williams Kherkher for a free initial consultation.
